Welcome to our new look Information Update Service.
We believe it's important for us to keep you updated on issues that could have an impact on
you and rather than issuing regular 'newsletters', we prefer to email you from time to time with
simple, jargon free information.
The format will always be the same - a headline, a short paragraph or two,
a link to more information and the option to contact us to discuss.
We hope you find them useful...
Inheritance Tax - We all get a double nil rate band now don't we ?
Since the rules changed in October 2007, many people are under the impression that
on the death of the second spouse (or civil partner), there will be an automatic
entitlement to a 'double nil rate band' (currently totalling £650,000).
This isn't the case!
|
 |
Firstly, only any unused nil rate band allowance can be transferred and secondly, it isn't automatic.
It has to be applied for by completing the relevant form and sending it to HMRC
with supporting paperwork,
including the death certificate of the first spouse/civil partner to die.
To find out more, the link below takes you to the relevant page of the HMRC website:
Further information on transferring Nil Rate Bands
As always, if you would like to discuss how this might affect you, please get in touch.
Kind Regards,
